Major Date Varieties Worldwide
The diversity of date palm cultivars around the world is extensive, with an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 varieties identified globally.
Global Date Production and Cultivated Area
Date palms are grown in more than 34 countries.
In terms of cultivated area, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, and Iran rank first, second, and third respectively.
Iran has approximately 232,000 hectares of date plantations, of which 199,000 hectares are productive.
About 85% of the world’s total date production comes from Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan.
Iran produces roughly 1.014 million tons of dates annually, making it one of the largest producers in the world.
In terms of production and export volume, Iran ranks second globally after Egypt.
Differences Among Date Varieties
The main differences between date varieties lie in:
- Type of sugars
- Moisture content
Total sugar levels vary slightly across cultivars, usually by only a few percent.
Sugars in dates include fructose and glucose (reducing sugars) as well as sucrose.
Soft dates contain:
- Lower sucrose
- Higher reducing sugars
- Higher moisture
Overall, soft dates provide less energy than semi-dry or dry dates.
Major International Commercial Varieties
Although the number of global varieties is large, only a few have strong commercial markets.
The most important and highly valued international cultivars are:
- Deglet Noor
- Medjool
- Khalas
Among these, Deglet Noor and Medjool are considered the finest and most commercially important varieties worldwide.
Botanical Description
The date palm is a monocotyledonous plant belonging to the Arecaceae (Palm) family, which contains approximately 200 genera and 1,500 species.
One of the most important genera in this family is Phoenix, consisting of 12 species, all native to tropical and subtropical regions.
The commercial date palm, Phoenix dactylifera, is one of these species.
Root System
Because it is a monocot, the date palm lacks a true taproot.
Its root system is fibrous, similar to that of maize.
Primary seed roots produce secondary roots, which branch further into lateral roots of nearly uniform diameter.
In general, the date palm root system is divided into four main zones.
The root structure creates unique planting conditions:
- The absence of shallow surface roots allows intercropping with wheat, alfalfa, and vegetables.
- Deep and dense root zones enable the tree to access deep soil moisture, giving it strong tolerance to drought and water stress.
Root development is influenced by:
- Cultivation system
- Depth of groundwater
- Date palm cultivar
Trunk
The date palm trunk is:
- Straight, columnar, and cylindrical
- Nearly uniform in diameter from bottom to top
- Brown, woody, and unbranched
Typical trunk diameter ranges from 35 to 70 cm, and most commonly between 40 and 50 cm.
Leaves
The leaves are pinnate (compound) and vary from 3 to 7 meters depending on cultivar, age, and environment; the average length is about 4 meters.
Leaf characteristics:
- The petiole has a triangular cross‑section with two lateral angles and one lower angle.
- The base of the petiole is relatively smooth, but moving upward it becomes covered with numerous spines.
- The midsection contains spine-like leaflets, often called spine-leaflets.
- At the tip, one or two terminal leaflets may appear.
Inflorescences and Fruit Formation
Each year, date palms produce several spathes.
In female palms, after the spathes open and pollination occurs (using pollen from male palms), they develop into fruit clusters.
Female flowers contain three carpels, each with a stigma.
All carpels are capable of pollination, but typically only one carpel continues to develop, while the others abort.
